Le Bestiaire imaginaire, l'animal dans la photographie de 1850 à nos jours

Palais Lumière, Evian, France

October 9, 2010 - January 16, 2011

The show Le Bestiaire imaginaire, l'animal dans la photographie de 1850 à nos jours (An Imaginary Bestiary, Animals in Photography from 1850 till today) gathers more than 150 photographs of real or imaginary animals, from some of the major 19th century photographers and international contemporary artists, each moved by a similar idea : the place of the animal in photography. Animals are extremely present in literature and popular culture but also in the arts. Their enigmatic nature has for long fascinated and inspired artists who have used them as models from the very early stages of photographic practise. The images that constitute this exhibition are an invitation to reverie, allowing us to reflect upon the complex relationships that we entertain with the animal species, altogether so close and so distant.

This exhibition is produced with the support of Conseil régional Rhône-Alpes and Conseil général de la Haute Savoie.
